ART DECO ERA VINTAGE GEISHA MAKEUP COMPACT CASE, LEATHER W CHROME ORIGINAL PIECES INSIDE. Ive been told this belonged to a Geisha girl, and dates to the 1930s/1940s era. It is a firm box, probably made of metal and completely covered in high quality black leather, and has a wonderful, smooth finish, with highly embossed, raised Deco angling striped designs on the top. The leather is in super condition and the case clearly was stored carefully and taken good care of.The top is excellent with no scuffs/scratches. The bottom of the case has some minor dents but no scuffs. Inside it is really delightful, with a bar that raises into place to keep the case open, while the lady applies her special makeup using the square beveled mirror set into the lid (in excellent condition--no silvering loss, or scratches, bright, reflective, just a bit of darkening along the very bottom edge). There is an orange ribbed silk lining and also a removeable orange silk lining pad on the bottom, which has a zig-zag edge.
(Clean and fresh condition with no spots). In addition to the bar that goes up and down, there is the original orange ribbon which holds the lid open in place, as well. Inside the box is lined with another chrome box. There is a set of 4 chrome cases inside, two rectangular shape with hinging lids and 2 round cases with lift-off lids. These cases are bright and shiny and have no dents or damage. There is a tiny sable hair brush with a reddish-orange handle, which may be of bakelite. Only the largest chrome case seems to have some vestiges of former contents. Otherwise I would venture to say the case and set have never been used at all.
The chrome latch works well and the original short leather handle is in place and in great shape. No odors or other issues.
I find no marks on this case or set. The case measures 5 inches long, by 4 3/8 inches wide, and 1 1/8 inches deep.
