Up for sale, a 1950's Gibson L-48 archtop acoustic guitar in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. The L-48 is a classic Gibson non-cutaway archtop model with a 16 wide lower bout, 3 1/2 body depth, and a rare tone wood combination of a spruce top, maple back, and Honduran mahogany sides and neck, seen only on the L-48 from 1952-54.
The guitar has a sweet, midrange-forward tonality, yielding great presence and top end snap for single note lines, and delivering complex chord voicings with clarity and a rich, textured profile. The spruce, maple and mahogany construction brings out a certain attack and snappiness with a lively and resonant response, tempered by a smooth growl. The sound of this L-48 is perfectly suited for spirited leads and strumming alike. Weighing only 4lbs 9oz, this archtop has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and comfortable action. The one-piece mahogany neck has a full C shaped profile with lots of heft and shoulder, measuring. 883 deep at the 1st fret and tapering to a robust 1.033 at the 9th.
The thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard features pearl dot inlays and original slender fretwire. The frets retain their full height and well-rounded crowns with only light wear on frets 1-5 beneath B and High E strings, and virtually zero wear further up the fretboard. The scale length is a full 24 3/4", and the nut measures 1 11/16" in width. The headstock features a gold Gibson silkscreen, and the stock set of Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well with original white buttons and only a touch of surface patina.
The original Brazilian rosewood floating bridge with compensated saddle is present, along with the original single-ply transparent tortoise pickguard and bracket. The original nickel trapeze tailpiece is intact as well.
The guitar retains the original warm two-tone Sunburst nitro lacquer finish with no touchup or overspray and tight vertical lacquer checking. There is strum wear across the upper bout, and some isolated minor finish scratches on the lower bout in the edges of the Sunburst. The guitar is crack-free, with only some assorted minor nicks and scuffs from careful use on the body and neck profile. A modern brown tolex hardshell case with green plush interior is included.
